Who is responsible for moving the furniture?
Unless other arrangements are made the removal of furnishings, draperies, paintings, and other items from the room is your responsibility.
How often do wood floors need to be replaced?
Engineered wood floors have a thin wear layer and may only be refinished 2-3 times, at best. Additionally if you have an existing prefinished floor it may be imposable to match do to the constant re-tooling of the product, and color or stain changes with in a product line. However, Solid wood floors can last over a hundred years or so and can be refinished 10-12 times. And the milling process has not changed so a floor made in this century will still go together with a floor milled in the last century.
How long does Sanding/finishing take?
Based on a floor being 500 sft in size, it will take 1 day to apply a stain color and 3 days to apply 3 coats of urethane finish. Repairs to the wood floor and other considerations may add additional time.
Are we able to walk on the floor and what about the pets?
Yes, during the installation and or sanding process you can walk freely through the project. However when the stains and finishes are drying access will be restricted. Dogs and Cats should be kept out of the work area during the entire process, especially during the staining and finishing, do to their pet hair.
When can area rugs go back?
Do to the curing of the finish which can take up to a month for oil-modified finishes, rugs can be place back in the room after 30 days.
Is there a lot of cleaning afterwards?
Please read the testimonials. Karl does all he can to eliminate heavy cleaning. The use of vacuums attached to the sanding equipment and the hanging of plastic film over cabinets and door ways greatly reduces the amount of cleaning.
How long can floors go between re-coats?
That entirely depends on how you live on you floors, the harder you are on the finish layer the sooner it will need to be re-coated. In general, Karl recommends re-coating your hardwood floor every 3 to 5 years. A good indication of when to re-coat is the loss of “sheen”.
Is hardwood flooring durable enough for a kitchen or bathroom?
Yes. Clients are discovering what basketball players have always known: wood flooring can take a pounding and still look great. Hardwood flooring in a kitchen or powder bath is quit common and stands up to high traffic and the occasional spill better then any other flooring option.
Does hardwood flooring promote a healthy indoor environment?
Millions of people suffer from sensitivity to chemicals and toxins. Tests by leading allergists have proven that wood flooring being hypoallergenic provides a healthier environment for allergy sufferers. And bacteria, dust, and dirt do not embed themselves in wood flooring, as they do with other flooring options. Simple regular maintenance, such as dust-mopping, sweeping, or vacuuming will keep wood floors sanitary.
There are so many species of wood how should I select one?
Choosing a species of wood involves more than selecting a color to match the décor. Both decorators and installers should be aware of the basic facts regarding wood species. Other appearance-related attributes are important for designers too, such as texture, grain, and color.
